Benefit Hoola - perfect for contouring

If you're a regular reader of my blog you would've gathered I'm into my contouring. I have quite a few bronzers and contouring products, e.g. Nars Laguna, Illamasqua Bronzing Duo, Chic Australia Bronzer, but most are warm toned. For a few days last week we had rainy days and I wasn't able to use my regular products because they looked fake on those cloudy days...

...So I promptly marched into my nearest Benefit counter one lunch time at work and bought the Benefit Hoola, the perfect cool toned totally matte bronzer and contour powder.

The brush that comes with it is good for contouring around the nose, but it's too stripy for use all over the face.

Because it's so matte it gives a most natural look whether you use it as a bronzer or a contour powder. I've only ever used it for contouring as I don't really feel the need to bronze my entire face, and this is just perfect.

As you can see the colour is perfectly matte, not a hint of shimmer (any sparkly bits you see on my finger is from another product I had been swatching).

Have you tried Hoola? Do you contour? If so, what do you use?

  1. I owned Hoola but could never make it work for me - it always made my face look dirty. I know it's very popular with lots of people though, so perhaps it just didn't work with my skintone.

  2. I've always wanted to try Hoola. I've heard wonderful things about it.

How do you think it fares compared to your contouring palettes - the 6-piece ones, etc.?

  3. May I ask what's your MAC skin shade/coloring? I"m NC25 and i own this but i've never used this lol i'm afraid this will be too muddy/dark/dirty for my skintone..!

  4. Hoola looks more like a contour than bronzer to me, because it's more brown than most bronzers. :)

  5. @dempss01 I think it's fairly cool toned so if u have warmer toned skin it might not work.
@emily This is lighter than the contour colour in the 6 piece palette so less scary to use. Also it's smoother to apply. Plus i like that it's compact and easy to take with u while travelling.

  6. @jennifer I'm also nc25 and i have no problems. i've never used it as a bronzer because i like more shimmer with my bronzers, but as contour it's perfect. And trick is to use blush with it after contouring to bring more dimension to ur face.
    @vintage makeup, agreed!

  8. Hi Lilit,

that is a really nice contouring powder. The color and the finishing looks great, but I don´t like the packaging. That´s nothing for my make up bag. I have never tried any benifit product.

I contour sometimes my cheeks and my nose area with MAC Bone Beige or Givenchy Bronzer. I prefer matte contouring powders.

I wish you a great time Canberra.

    xx, Sandra

  9. Thanks Cosmetic Junkie, I'll check it out a bit later!

Hi Sandra - I haven't tried the mac or givenchy powders yet, I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually! And I actually don't mind the packaging of benefit, I think it's kinda cute. Although it would be good if there was a mirror with it for touch ups.

  10. I love Hoola! Definitely one of my favorite bronzers, ever!! I love how matte it is, and how it's just brown making it impossible to look orange should you accidently apply a bit too much! =P

  15. Hoola is so pretty Lilit! It really does look like the perfect contouring color. You convinced me that I have to pick this up next time I am at Sephora LOL!

  16. @Hipnhaute - yep, makes me look like I was born with contoured cheekbones! lol

@ArtforEyes - thanks lovely, I love my blushes too.

@Alina- I think you and I are bad for each other's wallets! You convince me to buy stuff you review, and vice versa :)

  17. How much is Hoola anyway? Is it worth getting for an NC40?

    ReplyDelete
  18. @The - in Australia it's about $51. I'd swatch it first before buying because I know with my NC25-30 skintone it's perfect, so if I was any darker it wouldn't be worth getting it.

  19. I haven't been into contouring but after reading this I've been thinking more about it. So the other day I bought a mineral makeup foundation (matt) a couple of shades darker than my face colour and am going to try it that way.
What do you think of that plan?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Kath - that sounds like a great plan. Mineral foundation would probably be easier to blend and look more natural than some of the bronzer/contour things out there. Which brand did you get?

  21. It's a brand called LA Colours (or something like that) from a local chemist. Since I've been following this blog I've become obsessed by makeup and trying a few things and I found this really cheap brand by accident. It's prob nowhere near the quality of MAC, Illmasqua, NARS etc. but it's a stepping stone for trialling a look/style cheaply until I decide I like it. If I think it works for me then I'll spend more money on a better quality brand. LA Colors have quite a range of blushers and I've been cheaply experimenting with them too. xx
